"He made films that do not beg for your dopamine." Exactly. I love this whole essay and the way it's written -- thank you, Anand. And how extraordinary it must have been to make a connection with Tarr's colleagues. Tomorrow in San Francisco, one of our oldest cinemas is showing Sátántango, the whole thing, complete with two intermissions! During the Super Bowl, no less! Another theater here showed Werckmeister Harmonies a few months ago, before Tarr's death, to quite a good crowd who I could feel really sinking into the film's slowness, silence, and darkness. RIP, Béla.

Though I never quite made it to the end of Satantango at the time, it left a lingering haunting imprint on me. Your beautiful piece is making me return to Tarr’s films with fresh eyes.. beginning with Turin Horse!
